On Saturday 11th December 2010 the gaming world was torn a new one at the Spike VGA Awards.
The winners came as no surprise. All the triple A titles snapped up the big awards; Best Shooter = Call of Duty: Black Ops; Game of the Year = Red Dead Redemption; Best Multi-player = Halo: Reach. You may not agree with the full list of winners, I certainly don’t, but when its all decided by public vote its all down to what the general public think. However there is one thing that nobody can deny, the games that were revealed at this years VGA awards were phenomenal, all of next years big releases just lined up ready for you to count your pennies and think about taking out a loan to pay for them all.
There were 13 trailers on show and the vast majority were the heavy hitters of PS3, 360 and Multiformat fun. There isn’t an order to me posting these trailers as practically all of them are ace!
First up is Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception
Little is known of the storyline for the new Uncharted game, however it has been revealed that Drake and his mentor Victor Sullivan have gone in search of the lost city of Iram of the Pillars, in a journey that takes them through the Rub’al Khali desert and across the world.
Batman: Arkham City
Arkham City is the sequel to one of the best games of 2009, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and its already set to feature Two-Face and Catwoman. The plot follows on a year after AA where criminals are now all housed in a walled city where they can live their lives as they wish, however Batman waltzes in when trouble in the new city begins to become unstable due to the rise of Two-Face.
Taking place 4 years after Resistance 2 in 1957 you take on the role of Joseph Capelli, who was introduced in Resistance 2, on a journey across the United States in a world occupied by Chimera.
A SEGA produced game to tie into what is set to be 2011’s big blockbuster release. Developed closely with Marvel Studios it is shaping up to be a game worth watching. However it could always fall foul to SEGA’s slacker end of game dev and fall into the oblivion of film tie-ins gone wrong.
Forza Motorsport 4
Another Forza is on its way, and is set to clout GT5 more than Forza 3 had already done. Supposedly fully compatible with Kinect, however I’ll wait until I see it in action before I believe that it is a good addition to the game.
This wasn’t anything special, no new gameplay reveals, nor anything groundbreaking for those who have been following the game. Its just a video that shows the Aperture Robotics robots for multiplayer play.
The trailer reveals very little about Mortal Kombat and any of its new features, however the biggest point of note is that Kratos from God of War fame has made his way into the bloodfest. Definitely a high point for PS3 and God of War fans!
Very little was given away about this game, and I’m not going rely upon speculation. One thing is fact however, its release date is currently slated for 2012, so you have a little while yet to wait for this one.
SSX: Deadly Decents
For the first time in 4 years a full SSX game will be released to a crowd of fans who have long awaited a full blown sequel. This time the levels are all set on real world mountains for you to board your way down! Taking on what looks like a much darker and realistic approach to the extreme sport of snowboarding supercross this could be what the franchise needs to revive it.
Slated for release in 2013, a fair while away unfortunately, but this is definitely a project worth watching. A horror game that has film director Guillermo del Toro on board to deliver the fantasy and the thrills.
Based on the, in my opinion, awful TV series of the same name; where ‘scientists’ & experts recreate fighting styles of warriors of history to pit them together in combat to see who the victor will be. The announcement was for extra DLC for the title including new warrior classes to fight with. Nothing overly groundbreaking but I had to pad out the bit two reveals.
Here is the first big reveal, albeit one we all saw coming…
Mass Effect 3
Tantalising and just pure brilliance, this trailer just shows so much about Mass Effect 3 but raises hundreds more. Clearly Mass Effect 3 is set on a mission to rescue Earth from the Reavers and the Geths. The questions are raised more about how this will pan out as a game, how your commander Shepard is woven into the storyline (especially if you died in Mass Effect 2), and what about your old team mates and the decisions you made at the end of ME2. And its coming to PS3 too!
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Now this is what I have been waiting for. After many reports of how it was definitely was not coming and how they have most certainly not be working on it, its wonderful to know that its on its way and less than a year away! Set sometime after the events of Oblivioin in Skyrim, the Nord homeland in Tamriel. The story is very hush hush at the moment but from the trailer it seems it revolves around dragons and what I presume will be you, the player, “Dovahkiin” a man who the dragons seem to fear.
By far the TES V reveal is the best for me, I cannot wait to get my hands on it and explore the world of Skyrim. The rest of the games that were shown also look brilliant, and with the big hitters coming all next year you’ll definitely need some money to grab all of these, so you best get saving.
What games are you guys looking forward to playing the most and what’s your thoughts on the trailers and games?
